Opportunity: A 1-year full-time contract (renewable) as a research engineer in biomechanical and biomaterials engineering at the Lawson Research Institute located in Victoria Hospital, London, ON, Canada (www.lawsonresearch.com), which is affiliated with Western University (www.uwo.ca)

Research Context: The research engineer will work in a new 300 sq.ft. laboratory fully equipped with Instron testers, a strain gage system, a thermographic stress analysis system, computers for CAD modeling and finite element analysis, and other instrumentation. The research engineer will report directly to Dr. Emil Schemitsch (orthopaedic surgeon) and Dr. Radovan Zdero (biomechanical engineer).

Research Topics: Measuring bone mechanical properties; stress analysis of orthopaedic implants for joint replacement and fracture fixation; spine biomechanics; and developing new biomaterials.

Research Tasks: Mechanical testing; CAD modeling; finite element analysis; data analysis; assisting with writing journal articles; and assisting with writing research funding applications.

Background Skills: BEng/BASc or MEng/MASc in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or equivalent; experience with mechanical testing, CAD modeling, and finite element analysis will be helpful, but not mandatory; excellent English language skills (reading, writing, speaking).

This is a two-year, full-time position with expected placement after the completion of their commitment to the training site.

Job Summary
The Development and Testing Engineer works collaboratively with internal and external team members to develop and lead testing protocols to validate designs and to identify opportunities to improve product offerings. This team member ensures that the product meets both external and internal requirements, including legal compliance and customer expectations.
The Development and Testing Engineer also monitors and advises on the performance of the quality management system and reports on performance.
Responsibilities

  • Implement new ideas through interaction with outside design teams and suppliers as well as the internal product development group
  • Interact with customers and the Sales and Marketing team to receive product feedback and develop solutions to improve player experience with the product
  • Maintain technical expertise with regard to industry product requirements and interact with industry groups, such as the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment, the National Athletic Equipment Reconditioner Association and Safety Equipment Institute, and work with customers and test agencies, such as the NFL, NCAA and Virginia Tech
  • Collect and maintain customer feedback and lead issue resolution activities
  • Act as the resident expert in testing equipment by recommending and developing specifications for equipment purchases
  • Conduct extensive testing on current products and prototypes and actively engineer new solutions from insights gained through testing
  • Establish and document engineering specifications and tolerances for components and finished goods
  • Define sampling frequencies and ensure data acquisition rates are maintained to ensure stability of processes
  • Lead external testing engagements, develop test methodologies and procedures used to prove out new designs, and manage the test laboratory, including supervision of technicians and lab personnel

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to be flexible and the tendency to be a responsible self-starter and problem-solver
  • Ability to work in a highly organized and efficient manner with a team-oriented, can-do attitude
  • Ability to prioritize and maintain a customer-first attitude
  • Love of the game and a desire to continuously innovate to provide the safest product possible

Students from four BME projects presented their poster at the inaugural Science and Technology Showcase on April 5th, 2017. The projects got great reception from the audience which included folks from industry, academia and various organizations. The students not only made valuable contacts but also got a chance to practice for their senior project posters session on April 13, 2017. This upcoming poster session, however, has grade implications 🙂

Responsibilities:

· Join Motus’ Physics Engine team, to innovate and integrate world-class biomechanics algorithms into mass-market products.
· Research and apply new mathematical techniques to analyze data captured from Inertial Measurement Units, Force Sensors, and Electromyography Sensors.
· Research and apply advanced biomechanical principles to skeletal data obtained from 3D Optical Motion Capture, 6DOF Inertial Measurement Units, and 2D Computer Vision Science outputs.
· Assist Motus’ Biomechanics Lab in data collection during product validation and testing.
· Perform robust testing and validation for all developed biomechanics algorithms and shipped products.

Qualifications:
· B.S./M.S./or Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or related technology field.
· Previous experience in a clinical Biomechanics Laboratory.
· Have developed software for a previous or existing product on the market.
· Experience in the field of 3D dynamics, biomechanics, wearable technology, motion capture, force plates, inverse dynamics, advanced numerical methods, and inertial sensor systems.

Preferred Skills:
· Passionate towards sports and human movement.
· Highly proficient with Matlab and C software languages.
· Ability to work in an autonomous, fast-paced startup environment.
· Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
