This summer I had the wonderful opportunity of conducting neuro-engineering research at New Jersey Institute of Technology. This National Science Foundation-funded Research Experience for Undergraduate (REU) program was one-of-a-kind research experience. My team and I had the pleasure of working under the direction of NJIT professor who is doing pioneering research in neuro-engineering, It’s burgeoning field that uses engineering to analyze, repair, or enhance the nervous system.

Neurite Outgrowth

Neurite Outgrowth

My team’s project is entitled “Encapsulation of Schwann cells for Neurite Outgrowth in a Microfluidic Device”. Our study explored the effectiveness of Schwann cell (SC) microencapsulation for Growth Fact or (GF) release using a microfluidic device for simplified analysis. SC surrounded in a polyelectrolyte membrane, Alginate-Poly-L-Lyine-Alginate (APA), were co-cultured with PC12 cells to model neurite formation. Results showed that microencapsulated SC elicited neurite outgrowth and neural cell differentiation in-vitro. This showed that microencapsulated Schwann cells secrete enough Nerve Growth Factor (NGF) to induce nerve growth. SC encapsulated in APA have yet to be studied in relation to how they differentiate neural cells. This study has showed that after encapsulating SC in APA spheres the SC were able to induce neurite outgrowth from PC12 cells. This concept can be applied to the treatment of nerve regeneration in patients affected by neuropathy.

program focused on introducing students to the research process and, at end, it provided a very satisfactory hand-on experience. It taught me to become more independent and intellectual thinkers, and helped me to excel in written, visual, and oral scientific communication.

A note from the Biomedical Engineering office:

The semester has started off with energy and high expectations. We hope that you are well. Dr. Jensen wanted me to pass along some important information sent to us by Career Services, and our own President Moudgil.

On September 18th and 19th, Career Services will be holding an event in the Engineering Building. Employers will be interviewing students who have made reservations through Career Quest. If you are interested in participating in this event, go to your Blackboard portal to register through your Career Quest account to be given an audience by representatives from Gestamp North America Inc., Hittachi Automotive Systems, ESG Automotive Inc., and Yazaki.

Yes, you do have a Career Quest account. If you have a Blackboard account… you have a Career Quest Account !! We are surprised that many students don’t know this.

Register for this event by logging into to your Blackboard account, Click on the Career Services tab at the top right, and this will take you to the “Services for Students” page, next, click on the Career Services Logo and this will open up a page that prompts you to log onto your Career Quest account. Follow the links to register.

this event you will be able to speak directly with industry experts about ANYTHING! Ask questions about careers, resume, cover letters, or anything about the employment process. These chats are brief 15 minute discussions, so work on your pitch, and be the golden Biomedical Engineer that you are.

Go for it! Even if you feel you are not ready to jump into the work force, this is a great opportunity to rehearse for the “real world”. More to come have a great semester.

Best regards,

FootwareExcessive rotational traction that occurs at the interface between the shoe and the playing surface, as well as shoe properties such as rotational stiffness, may have the potential to influence the high incidence of lower extremity injuries in athletes.

By Feng Wei, PhD, and Eric G. Meyer, PhD

American football is one of the most popular sports in the United States. In 2010 more than 1.1 million male high school athletes from more than 14,000 high schools and more than 66,000 male collegiate athletes played football. Participation in high school football has been continuously increasing, with more than 100,000 additional participants (a 12.2% increase) between 1997 and 2007. Football is also a leading cause of sports-related injuries. Out of all high school sports, football has the highest overall injury rate, almost twice that of basketball. Reports estimate that more than 300,000 high school athletes sustain football-related injuries annually…read more. Dr. Meyer

BMEStart Competition

The world needs more effective, functional and affordable technology solutions to clinical medical problems. NCIIA’s second annual BMEStart competition recognizes undergraduate excellence in biomedical innovation. The competition is the first in the United States designed specifically for undergraduate biomedical and bioengineering students.

By generating more activity and interest in this field locally, we can stimulate the invention of medical technologies and devices that are adopted as clinical solutions.

Prizes of $10,000, $5,000 and $2,500 will be awarded to the three winning teams. Cash prizes will be disbursed to each of the winning team’s departments to be allocated at the discretion of the faculty advisor.

Challenge Detroit – Live, Work, Play and Give

About Challenge Detroit

Challenge Detroit is a national initiative focused on revitalizing Detroit by attracting innovative leaders to bring their intellectual capital and talents to the City.

The Collaborative Group, a Michigan-based non-profit dedicated to fostering entrepreneurship, has launched Challenge Detroit, an urban revitalization project for one of the most significant cities in the world. Challenge Detroit will select 30 innovative leaders from throughout the United States to live, work, play and give in Detroit. Participants will live in Detroit, supported by a $500/month housing stipend; receive a $30,000 salary to work at one of the top companies in the region; participate in monthly team challenges, in partnership with area non-profits, designed to positively impact the city and region; and experience the City through organized social and cultural events.

During their year in Detroit, participants will gain new insights about the city and the greater Detroit region while sharing their story with the world through regular blogging, video logging and social media updates.

“We believe, through their experiences with Challenge Detroit, these individuals will be intrigued to stay in Detroit, work in Detroit, bring new ideas to Detroit, even start their own business in Detroit, and by doing so, they will have a positive influence on our region today and in the future,” said Groves.

Challenge Detroit is accepting applications through March 16, 2012 and the year in Detroit will begin in August 2012.
