Please register and attend. I am also hoping to recruit a few students from BME to be present in the labs to talk to the visitors. I have been told that several Medical Technology companies were invited to attend this event so it may have implications for future opportunities.

For those of you engaged in various projects, there is also a possibility to showcase your work. Please talk to me if you are interested.

Team Bike Raptor is a collaboration project between LTU and University of Detroit-Mercy (UDM) and the group is comprised of three students each from Biomedical Engineering students (LTU), Mechanical Engineering and  Nursing (UDM). The goal is to design and fabricate a working device for our client who was in an automobile accident and sustained a spinal cord injury (SCI) that left him with incomplete quadriplegia. The client has made some recovery and he has recovered some of the movement in his arms. It was determined that a custom exercise device will aid in his rehabilitation. The machine, Bike-Raptor, targets strengthening of muscles and increasing range of motion. The design allows the client to push on pedal-like handles attached to a wheel with magnetic resistance mechanism. It is our hope that this machine will improve his rehabilitation efforts so he can gain independence at a faster pace than without this type of exercise.

Two Announcement related to BMES 2015 which will be in Tampa from Oct 7-10. Last year we have two groups that traveled to BMES and it was a great experience for them. I highly encourage you to submit and also consider the design competition. Any BME faculty can help you with the abstract or other requirements for the two items:

1) BMES 2015 Conference

In order for you to attend the BMES conference you have to submit a one-page abstract format will be required this year. This format will allow reviewers to more effectively choose those abstracts which are best suited for podium presentations.

The abstract should include:

  • title
  • introduction
  • description of the materials and methods used
  • study results (including up to one figure)
  • discussion of how this work fits into the context of greater societal needs.

Please review the abstract template on the submission site: http://bmes.org/abstract

During the submission process, please select the most appropriate track & subtrack from the list provided in the online system, or choose the track and “other” if no named sessions seem appropriate. You may request to present your work in a platform or in a poster session. The technical program committee will attempt to honor your preference, but may not always be able to do so. Presentations may be scheduled on any of the three days of the meeting. All accepted presenters must register for the full meeting.

The submission deadline is April 23, 2015. A The nominal abstract processing fee of $35 is a submission fee and does not apply towards the required meeting registration.

2) BMES Design Competition:

The Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) will hold its first ever Student Design Competition this year. All BMES undergraduate student members engaged in student design projects are encouraged to apply and enter the competition which is being sponsored by Medtronic.

The application deadline is May 25, 2015. The 2015 Design Theme is Bioinstrumentation!!

All design team members MUST be BMES Student Members and BMES student chapter members in good standing. Top 6 proposals will be chosen and those teams will present, via oral presentations, at BMES 2015 Annual Meeting in Tampa (Oct 7-10, specific day to be determined). At the meeting, the top 6 teams will be narrowed down to the top 3 winners. Winners will receive monetary awards. This is a great opportunity to showcase projects and to network with product development and design professionals in BME.

Design competition details are available at the BMES website at: http://bmes.org/undergrad_design_comp
