BMES Students’ Volunteering Experience — Join Us!

Comments Off on BMES Students’ Volunteering Experience — Join Us!

The few members of Biomedical Engineering Society had the opportunity to give back to the community and gain valuable experience in the field. They volunteered at the local nonprofit organization: World Medical Relief. The mission of the  organization is to distribute surplus medical supplies to countries where they are needed most, such as Philippines and Haiti. The visit focused on the biomedical  engineering department. The purpose of this division is to test the donated equipment and make sure that  it is accurate and reliable. One of the employees demonstrated some of the equipment and how it is tested.

The organization receives numerous donations from hospitals and clinics, and it is the volunteers’ job to sort through the supplies and prepare them for shipments. LTU students were able to assist with the sorting and interact with a few of the volunteers. Most of the people who choose to help out, do so, on a regular basis. However, the World Medical Relief could use more volunteers to achieve full potential. Some of supplies remain on the shelves for up to two years before they are sorted, during which time many expire.

BMES is organizing another visit to World Medical Relief on Saturday, March 31. Please contact the BMES president Joe Seta (jseta@ltu.edu) if you wish to participate.
